A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse. In July it moves heat out of the house, the way an air conditioner does. In January it moves heat in from the outside air, using electricity and no flame. One outdoor unit and one indoor air handler do both jobs, so there is no separate furnace.
Older heat pumps earned a poor reputation. Current multi-stage models are built for cold weather, and a valley morning in the 30s is within their range.
Roseville and Sacramento summers run above 100 degrees for stretches most years. The system has to carry the whole house on those afternoons, so its size and the condition of the ducts matter more than the name on the cabinet.
Many Roseville and Sacramento houses are 1970s to 2000s tract homes with the air handler in the attic or a closet. In those houses the new air handler takes the place of the furnace or the old air handler.

Indoors, the air handler goes where your furnace or old air handler sits now, which in many valley houses is the attic or a hall closet. It sits in a pan with a condensate line, and the ducts connect to it. Ducts that lose air waste what the system makes, which is why California Title 24 requires duct testing on most replacements. The outdoor unit sits on a level pad with its own electrical disconnect on the wall. Side yards and narrow runs along the house are common here, and the unit needs room around it to move air. Outside, a heat pump looks like an air conditioner, because it is one that can also run in reverse.
In a July heat wave, you buy whatever fixes the house that day. Fall is the quieter time to compare a heat pump with a furnace and air conditioner on your own schedule, before the first cold nights decide for you.
Rebates are the other reason to look now. Which ones you can use depends on who sends your electric bill: SMUD in Sacramento County, Roseville Electric in most of Roseville, or PG&E. As of October 2026, the federal heat pump tax credit has ended, and the state TECH incentive is listed as fully reserved, so the utility programs are what remains, and SMUD says its rebates are subject to availability of funding. You see the price before you decide anything. Bronco is an Amana dealer, and Wisetack financing is there if monthly payments suit you. Every install contract spells out the warranty in writing: a labor warranty with Bronco, typically one or two years, and the manufacturer's parts warranty, typically ten years.
