The air conditioner is about to run for months, in a city where summers run above 100 degrees for stretches most years. In general, a cooling tune-up is aimed at the outdoor condenser, the indoor coil and the electrical parts that wear when a system runs hard, such as a tired capacitor, a dirty coil or restricted airflow.
The furnace has been off since spring, and the first cold night is its first start. In general, a heating tune-up on a gas furnace is aimed at ignition, the burners, the venting and the heat exchanger, the parts that matter for both comfort and safety.
Each visit covers one system: the air conditioner in the spring tune-up, the heater in the fall tune-up. The technician works from a written checklist of the components that affect that system. The coil is cleaned during the spring visit, and filters are installed during the visit; you supply the filters. A problem found during a tune-up is quoted before any repair.
