Heater out in chilly weather

★★★★★

“Our heater had gone out during these chilly temperatures, and while some companies might not have treated it with urgency, Jennifer absolutely did. She was compassionate, attentive, and made us feel genuinely cared for. … The work was done professionally, quickly, and at a price that was more than reasonable.”

The old part handed back

★★★★★

“Today, Bronco completed work on my older HVAC that was inconsistently blowing air (off/on) by replacing a circuit board and rewiring some circuits. I found the technician to be highly competent, a good communicator, and on time. … The old circuit board was provided after the job and it clearly had heat/electrical damage, probably caused by the wiring.”

A second price on a repair

★★★★★

“Experts in the trade with fair prices and just all around nice people. … Last year when my system needed an actual repair, their competitors rewarded my loyalty with a bid for over $2K! Phil came out and fixed my system that day in about an hour for $200.”

A Sacramento customer for many years

★★★★★

“When I came home on one of the recent 100+ degree days in Sacramento and discovered that my air conditioner had stopped working, I immediately called Bronco and, because it was after hours, left a message. The next morning I received a text from Jenn indicating that a technician was available later that morning. Phil arrived and within a short amount of time had my system up and running again. This is the kind of service I have received from this company for many years, which is why I keep coming back.”

// Furnace And Heater Problems

Heater Not Working? Match The Symptom

Gas furnaces, attic air handlers and heat pumps in heating mode share most of these. Whatever yours is doing, tell the office when you call.

No heat at all

Nothing comes on when the thermostat calls for heat. The cause ranges from a safety switch to an igniter or control board.

The air blows cold

The blower runs but the air is not warm. A heat pump that has iced over can do this too.

It starts, then shuts off

A furnace that quits after a minute or two is short cycling, often a dirty flame sensor or a clogged filter.

Clicking, but no flame

Clicking, then nothing, means the start sequence is not finishing. A delayed boom when the burners light is worth a call too.

A burning smell on the first start

Summer dust can burn off with a short smell on the first run of the season. If it does not fade, or the furnace shuts down, call.

The breaker trips

Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips when the furnace starts. Call and tell us when it trips.

The thermostat is blank or wrong

Try new batteries first. If the screen stays dark, or the house does not match the setting, call.

A smell of gas

Leave the house without touching switches or the thermostat, and call PG&E from outside. Once PG&E says the house is safe, call us.

Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

// A Roseville Shop In Sacramento

A Family Shop That Drives To Sacramento

Bronco has been family owned since 2007, working out of Roseville and driving into Sacramento. You deal with the people who run the company: Jenn Fiechter books the call, and Phillip Olmstead, the owner, still runs calls himself.

A technician finds what failed, tells you what it is and what it costs, and leaves the decision with you. If you were quoted a new furnace and want a second look at what is actually wrong, that is a call we take.

Heard from a Sacramento customer

★★★★★

“These guys were friendly, honest and hard working (the owner himself was the technician on my service call) - plus they came in at about half the price of some of the bigger, more heavily advertised companies around Sacramento. … Afterward, I was given a full walk-through of the repairs and shown the bad part so I know what was done. Bottom line, their work was top notch and done for the quoted price.”

// How A Furnace Repair Call Goes

From The First Call To Your Decision

Call the Roseville office

Jenn Fiechter books the call, Monday to Friday, 8 to 5. Tell her what the furnace is doing and which part of Sacramento you are in. After 5pm and on weekends, calls go to voicemail. Jenn calls back every missed number the next morning, whether or not you left a message.

A technician diagnoses it

A Bronco technician finds the fault and explains it. Phillip Olmstead, the owner, still runs calls himself.

You hear the price

The service call to diagnose the system is $89. After the diagnosis you hear the repair price and decide. If the furnace is near the end of its life, you hear that too.

You decide

Repair it, wait, or price a replacement.

// Furnaces In Sacramento Homes

What We See In Sacramento Furnaces

Sacramento is not one kind of house. These are common patterns, not a survey.

Older East Sacramento and Land Park homes

Many of these homes started with a floor or wall furnace, and many have had a central system added since, often in the attic. When you call, tell us which you have.

Natomas tract homes

Many Natomas homes were built in the 1990s and 2000s, and the furnace or air handler is commonly in the attic. A furnace from the late 1990s is a quarter century old now, and the heat exchanger is the part to watch. A worn igniter, a dirty flame sensor or a tired blower motor is a repair.

Tule fog mornings, 38-degree nights

Winters here are short but damp. A furnace that sat idle since spring is asked to run for hours on the first cold night, and whatever is weak fails then.

Gas in Sacramento comes from PG&E and electricity from SMUD. A heat pump in heating mode runs on SMUD power, and SMUD has rebate programs for some upgrades; check current terms with SMUD before you buy.

We book heating repair across Sacramento, including Natomas, Land Park, East Sacramento, Arden Arcade, Pocket, Tahoe Park, Oak Park, Elmhurst, Curtis Park and Midtown.

Cooling is the other half of the year: see AC repair in Sacramento and AC installation in Sacramento, or everything Bronco does in Sacramento. Our home shop has the same service on the furnace repair in Roseville page, and Bronco is a heating and air conditioning company in Roseville first.

// Repair Or Replace

When A Furnace Is Past Repairing

Most no-heat calls are a failed part. A few are not, and you should hear which one yours is from the person looking at it, with the numbers side by side.

Before and after of an old furnace cabinet replaced by a new air handler with wrapped ductwork
Before and after: an old furnace cabinet with torn, hanging insulation on the left, and the new air handler that replaced it, with wrapped ductwork, on the right.

A part failed on a furnace that is otherwise sound

That is a repair. Igniters, flame sensors, blower motors and control boards are the usual suspects, and the repair costs a fraction of a new furnace.

A furnace 20 or more years old needs a major part

Price the repair and a replacement side by side. A big repair on an old furnace can be money spent on a unit near the end of its life, and you should see both numbers before you decide.

A cracked heat exchanger

A cracked heat exchanger is a safety problem, not a repair, and the answer is usually a new furnace.

If it comes to a replacement, California Title 24 requires a permit and duct testing on most of them. We install Amana, and Bronco offers financing through Wisetack.

// Before The Next Cold Snap

Catch It Before The First Cold Night

A furnace that sat idle since spring runs for hours on the first cold night, and that is when the weak part shows itself. The Bronco maintenance plan is $14.49 a month per system, with a spring visit and a fall visit: a cooling tune-up in spring and a heating tune-up in fall.

Heating Repair Questions

Do you come to Sacramento for furnace repair?

It depends on what failed. A technician diagnoses it first, and you hear the price for the repair before you decide. The service call to diagnose the system is $89. If the repair turns into a replacement, Bronco offers financing through Wisetack.

No. Leave the house without touching switches or the thermostat, and call PG&E from outside. Once PG&E says the house is safe, call us.

Yes. Bronco installs and repairs heat pumps, so one that ices over and stays iced, blows cool air in winter or runs in only one mode is a call we take. Steam off the outdoor unit on a cold morning is its defrost cycle and is normal. Our heat pump repair page has more.

Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and above the room temperature, replace its batteries if it takes them, and replace a clogged filter. If a breaker keeps tripping, do not keep resetting it. Then call and tell the office what the furnace is doing.
